The royal insurance of Almayate (1487-1497)

The singularity of the security of Almayate, a mudejar village situated in the coastal strip, lies in the fact that is is only one in Málaga capable of invalidating an item in the Vélez-Málaga agreement by which the community was prohibited from inhabiting the country houses near the sea. Granted by the king on May 11th 1487, it remained in force for a decade and when the Grammar School scholar, Serrano, discovered that its inhabitants had fallen into irregularities after the conquest, it was inmediately commuted for a harsh agreement. How, with this precedent was such exceptional safety granted? The silence of the sources consulted does not permit us to throw any light on whether it was thanks to or the product of bribery.
