In this text the author puts forward a reference process for the analysis of a painting. Using as examples and support El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz by El Greco. the author tries to lead an unexperienced viewer through some elements of plastic language by means of a logical, coherent and, as far as possible, objetive reasoning.
The analysis process divided into three stages: a) documentation, b) description and c) formal analysis is focused on the last one. It carries out a normal reading of the painting and bring up a series of problems to be solved through an iconologic study which is beyond the iniciatory nature of the text. In the process as a whole the following problems are brought up: primary composition, the characters´ posture and attitude, main or dominant colours, main plastic charactersitics, plastic space, composition, movement and rhythm, and the lines of strength and tension.
