This article examines the way in which the Indian towns of Oaxaca specialized in domestication, breeding and marketing of the cochineal. It then analyzes the costs and benefits that had this activity for indigenous peoples, and suggests some arguments that explain the ruin of this activity between 1752 and 1856.
