Natural possibility and demographic movements: The incident of the phylloxera in the population distribution in Malaga area

The municipality of Málaga has a very varied topography and it has traditionally developed intensive agricultural activities. In general terms these activities are of two types: gravepine monoculture in rough areas, and a great variety of products in flat fertile areas (the so-called vega). This variety was the main reason why this flat fertile land attracted, together with the city itself, large numbers of people living in the mountainous areas of the municipality when at the end of the 19th century gravepine-centered economy was destroyed by the economic crisis and the phylloxera plague.
