The treatmen given to the prostitutes by the local and central powers was very different according to the period in question. During the Counter-Reformation in the l 7th century the austerity was imposed and the Crown ordered to close the brothels. This order was received satisfactorily by the bishop of Malaga, Fray Alonso de Santo Tomas, who founded the Hospital of San Julian in a former brothel and also a hoste! for retired prostitutes, whose Constitutions are here transcribed.
