At the beginning of the reign of King Philip III, two naval expeditions were organised against Algiers, both of which were unsuccessful. When the authorities of the North African regency saw the failure of these two «journeys», they reacted by keeping a close watch on the ports of the Iberian Levant, while the galleots of Suleiman Arráez and Morato Arráez carried out an intense depredation in the autumn of 1601 and the summer of 1602. The territory that suffered this harsh punishment was the Spanish southeast in the form of landings, raids on some towns and the capture of numerous merchant ships in its waters.
For the preparation of this paper, we have relied on the documentation preserved in the General Archives of Simancas (State and War and Navy sections), the Crown of Aragon (Council of Aragon) and the municipal archives of Cartagena, Murcia and Lorca.
