Available information regarding physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in Cuban population, particularly in rural areas, is scarce. The objective of this study is to characterize PA and SB patterns in Cuban farmers in the rural community La Picadora. A descriptive survey was carried out among 15 male farmers actively involved in agricultural labor. Weekly levels of PA and SB were assessed by the short version of the IPAQ. Registered PA levels were higher than those reported for other rural populations of Cuba in previous studies, possibly due to the high physical input demanded by the agroecological systems practiced in La Picadora. Among participants, average PA level was 3.59 times higher than average SB level and was associated with high energy cost. Occupational and active-transport PA were practiced in high proportions and contributed the most to energy cost. Total PA and its components showed considerable variability in their relative doses and temporal regimen patterns, while SB was less variable and practiced in doses of no risk for health. In general, PA and SB showed different patterns though the predominant trend was a positive PA-SB balance.
