Effect of adaptive riding on a girl with a rare disease: single case design

Abstract

One of the recommendations of European Organization for Rare Diseases (Eurordis) are participating on therapeutic recreation programmes, were horses-assisted activities should be included. This study aims to evaluate effect of horses-assisted activities on the level of physical activity and sleep in a girl with rare disease and motor hyperactivity. A single-case design was carried out in which the effect of participating in an adaptive riding program on the level of physical activity and sleep. A triaxial accelerometer was used to collect data. The days where the participant practices horses-assisted activities, slept more time and perform less physical activity, compared with the days without this activity. In conclusion, as long as there is no contraindication, horses-assisted activities can be considered as a valid activity, within the therapeutic recreation programs recommended by Eurordis, with positive effects for health and quality of life.
