From the writing On Truth and Lie in an Extra-Moral Sense (1873), we discuss some of the cognitive assumptions present in theoretical formulations and artistic works of the Surrealists. The notion of estrangement governs this attempt to link Nietzsche’s theses on these pages with avant-garde orientations of Surrealist art, paying special attention to the world of the painter René Magritte.
