his paper aims to show the presence of the main questions of Nietzsche’s thought in the aphoristic and narrative work of Kafka. Through the reading of two stories, entitled The Top and Up in the Gallery, one can see the way Kafka shows the tragic conflict between life and knowledge. The radical skepticism that Nietzsche and Kafka share is not an obstacle to find an ironic distance to unmask, on the one hand, the hidden interests in every interpretation of reality and in every self-interpretation, and, on the other hand, to think about the function of art and beauty according to this impossible pretension to achieve truth.
