Meaning in life, Logotherapy, Personality Disorder, Systematic reviewAbstract
Experiencing that one’s life is meaningful is a fundamental human motivation. When meaning in life (MiL) is not achieved, existential emptiness or lack of experience of MiL can be experienced, which would manifest through clinical symptoms. Existential emptiness has been linked to disorders such as depression, substance addiction, and BPD. The aim of this systematic review was to analyse the relationship between personality disorders (PD) and MiL. Following the PRISMA procedures, nine studies on MiL in people diagnosed with PD were selected. The results showed a significant relationship between this nosological entity and low MiL. It is suggested to deepen the study on the transdiagnostic role of MiL in PD, its relationship with trauma and attachment, as well as on the efficacy of logotherapy and other psychotherapies that include logotherapeutic elements in the treatment of different PD and disorders with a strong component of existential frustration.
