ABSTRACT
Unamuno was a controversial writer and, wielding the art of provocation, he sought to stir readers from a perceived state of unconsciousness. The Spanish writer’s «The Tragic Sense of Life», which discusses the question of death, exemplifies such approach. This article examines Unamuno’s desire to survive, drawing a distinction between what he calls the «minimum» survival desirable, and the «maximum» immortality imaginable. Moreover, it explores the ethical bearing that can be inferred from the tragic sense of life; as Unamuno, with clear echoes of Rousseau y Schopenhauer, presents the experience of common suffering or compassion as a source of morality.
