ABSTRACT
The attempt to render biology a matter of engineering has been settled as one of the priorities in the scientific research agenda. Bio-engineering is supposed to allow us to manufacture and obtain anything we wish from living material, opening new expansion potentials for the emerging bioeconomy. This papers aims at discussing the ethical, philosophical and political challenges of synthetic biology, focusing both on its implicit understanding of the living as well as on its possible consequences for the relations between science, bioeconomy and society.
