Their functions include selecting external reviewers to carry out the blind reviews of each manuscript, overseeing the review process, and communication with authors. They also submit a decision on whether or not to publish manuscripts to the Executive Board for approval. From Volume 28 (2023), the journal includes a list of external reviewers to acknowledge and highlight their contribution to the quality of the articles published in the External Reviews section.
Scientific Committee: A group of nationally and internationally renowned experts who advise the Executive Board and Editorial Board on specific academic matters and, when necessary, may act as external reviewers. Statement of periodicity
Contrastes. Revista Internacional de Filosofía is published quarterly (three issues per year, one of which may be a monographic volume).
Sections
The journal accepts the following contributions for its regular issues: studies (articles), critical translations or research materials, bibliographic reports, and reviews. Monographic volumes will consist of an introduction (typically written by the editors) and the accepted contributions (studies).
Peer Review Process
Authors will receive an automatic notification through the Open Journal System (OJS) upon submission of the article, initiating the editorial process according to the following phases:
-
Receipt of the manuscript and initial evaluation
Once the manuscript is received, the Associate Editors will verify compliance with formal requirements (author guidelines) and assess its relevance to the thematic scope of Contrastes. Revista Internacional de Filosofía. Additionally, plagiarism detection software will be used to ensure the manuscript adheres to the journal's anti-plagiarism policy. Based on this evaluation, the Associate Editors will determine whether the manuscript meets the basic requirements to proceed in the process. If not, it will be rejected. -
Evaluation of submissions (double-blind peer review)
The selection of published works is governed by a double-blind peer review system, conducted by external reviewers who are specialists in the academic field of each contribution and selected by the Editorial Board. The reviewers will provide a report on the suitability of the manuscript for publication, indicating whether the article is publishable, publishable with revisions, publishable with substantial revisions, or not publishable. Upon receipt of the reviews, the Associate Editors of the journal will communicate the evaluation results, as well as the entire review process.
Reviewers will evaluate the manuscript based on the following criteria: relevance of the topic, engagement with current and relevant literature, argumentative coherence, appropriateness of the title in relation to the abstract and keywords, orthotypographic correctness, and writing style. Evaluation reports, which will not be made publicly available to ensure anonymity, will focus on the originality of the topic, innovation, and relevance to the journal. In any case, the reports will also include a rationale for the evaluation, which will be sent to the authors in cases of acceptance and may be requested as a summary in cases of rejection.
If the opinions of the two reviewers differ significantly, the manuscript will be sent to a third reviewer. The approximate duration of this phase is 3 months, although it may be shorter if reviewers submit their evaluations more quickly, or longer if deadlines are not met. Nevertheless, the editorial team ensures adherence to deadlines with the highest possible quality. The categories used by Contrastes. Revista Internacional de Filosofía to decide on manuscripts are detailed in the External Reviewers section.
-
Notification of editorial decision
After receiving the evaluations, the Editorial Team will inform the authors of the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript, and provide feedback, recommendations, and suggestions issued by the external reviewers. Once the contribution is accepted for publication and the DOI is assigned, it will be published in the "Advance Publication" section within a maximum of two weeks. -
Production and layout
Once the volume in which the article will appear is assigned, during the production process, a proof of the article will be sent to the authors for review. The author must submit any corrections within one week. -
Publication
After completing the galley proof revisions, the article will be published on the scheduled date for the assigned volume and issue.

Editorial Best Practices in Gender Equality
UMA Editorial, as the academic imprint of the University of Málaga (UMA) managed by the Service of Publications and Scientific Dissemination of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Transfer of the University of Málaga (UMA), shares the values of the institution. Among these is the principle of "equality" between women and men.
In this regard, we follow the guidelines set forth in the Style Guide for Editing by the Service of Publications and Scientific Dissemination, which is based on the Guidelines for the Equal Use of Language and Image at UMA (2015), a useful tool that offers resources and strategies to avoid linguistic sexism in editorial, teaching, research, and management activities.
From 2024 onwards, as part of our commitment to improving the journal and promoting best practices in gender equality, we will include the following information in the Statistics section of the journal: the percentage of women in editorial decision-making bodies, the percentage of women as external reviewers, and the proportion of studies published by women.
