Abstract

Digital piracy is an increasingly embedded phenomenon in our contemporary society and as such, it is accused of generating large economic losses to the affected industry. Self-control in turn, has been analyzed in numerous studies regarding its relationship with various criminal phenomena. This explorative study analyzes the influence of low self-control on digital piracy through a self conducted survey to a sample of university students, introducing as a novelty to previous studies the measurement of various forms of digital piracy. In addition, the effects of the subjectively perceived difficulty depending on what and how digital contents are downloaded are studied in combination with one of the dimensions of Self-control Theory, the preference for easy tasks. The results found moderate associations between self-control and all forms of digital piracy. Finally, according to these findings, recommendations are made for its prevention.
