Degrees and traits of the demand for criminal penalties. Punitive attitudes among the andalusian population

Focused on punitiveness, this article presents an analysis of data from the 9th Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia, Spain (PACIS), implemented by the Advanced Social Research Institute (IESA) in 2019. It first addresses a descriptive analysis of punitive attitudes operationalized as referring to (1) judicial sentences, (2) criminal public policy, (3) conditions of imprisonment and (4) goals of criminal penalties. Then the article analyzes the way gender, age, religious beliefs, educational level and political self-placement affect punitiveness. It is concluded than the levels of punitiveness in Andalusia vary with both the punitive referent and certain sociodemographic characteristics.
