Since the beginnings of Grammar as systematic discipline in ancient Greece, the question of singular phenomena within the framework of regular paradigms has been raised. Although the idea that Grammar (and therefore Philology) is a tekhne has triumphed, it has also been maintained that it is empeiria. A methodological element of this tekhne is the observation of individuals. This issue re-emerged in the 19th century in the treatment of circularity both in textual criticism and hermeneutics, and it is coupled with that of the character of the interpreter. Approaches to the idea of philological observation are studied in Ptolemy the Peripateticus, Schleiermacher, Nietzsche and Giorgio Colli.
