‘La palabra pintada’. Cultural journals and visual arts in the second Golden Age of the Spanish and Latin American literature (1918-1939)

This article develops the constant relations between Latin American painters and poets belonging to the artistic avant-garde during the first decades of the 20th Century in Argentina, as well as in their European connections, France in the first place, but also England, Germany and Spain, real back and forth movements that converge in a brilliant literary creation. Protagonists of a reaction against Modernism, they claim the union of word and painting, and find in the literary magazines —Ultra, Grecia, Litoral and Mediodia—, and in the manifestos, real channels of expression where these minorities pursue the establishment of a subjective aesthetics, free and without ties. Finally, this path will reach an end by looking to the key role of Maruja Mallo, an artistic personality we can not ignore when approaching this issue.
