Abstract

This paper addresses the arrival of Visitor General José de Gálvez in New Spain in 1765. The topic is mainly focused on the undertaking by such Visitor of the reformist project of the House of Bourbon in a province located at the Northeastern region of New Spain, called Nuevo Santander Colony (currently the state of Tamaulipas). The reformist attempt, as well as its politic, economic and social consequences in such entity between 1767 and 1772, are the two main topics addressed in the text.

Doctora en Historia por la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Investigadora del Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y coordinadora desde 1996 del Seminario de Historia del Norte de la mencionada institución. Pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Investigadores, nivel II, y es profesora en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM.
