Abstract

This work makes a symbolic approach to the transatlantic dialogue across the Iberian presence in the United States. Through an interdisciplinary and transversal methodology, here are analysed some aspects on the Portuguese immigration in North America, with a special focus in its journalistic production.  This main argument try to expose the relevance of the immigrant press in creation the American identity, as well as to promote an own community project, which has served to lay bridges among American and Iberian cultures along history.

Alberto Pena Rodríguez, Universidad de Vigo

Doctor en Ciencias de la Información (con Mención Europea) por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y doctor en Historia (con Premio Extraordinario) por la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Desde 1999 es profesor titular de Historia de la Propaganda en la Universidad de Vigo. Ha trabajado en varios períodos en Estados Unidos, donde ha impartido docencia e investiga diferentes aspectos relacionados con la historia de la comunidad ibérica. Ha sido Visiting Scholar en Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley y Brown University, además de Endowed Chair Professor in Portuguese Studies en la Universidad de Massachusetts Dartmouth. Sus trabajos estudian, sobre todo, la historia de la propaganda y la prensa en el mundo ibérico y lusófono. Su último libro es Salazar y Franco. La alianza del fascismo ibérico contra la España republicana: diplomacia, prensa y propaganda (Ediciones Trea, 2017).
