Abstract

In this paper we present a methodology for the creation of virtual laboratories focused on training interpreters in healthcare contexts. First, some of the main socio-cultural barriers patients and healthcare staff have to face are described to highlight the healthcare community interpreters´ role in overcoming them. Then, we show how virtual labs, scenarios, dialogues and gameplay (with achievement system) are designed. We also propose the use of questionnaires to analyze the users´ previous and post virtual experience. The abovementioned laboratories are an innovative tool to train professionals whose job entails a heavy responsibility. In this sense, the role of the interpreter is to provide an effective understanding among the parties involved, applying the accurate ethic codes, strategies and techniques in three different proposed situations: medical consultation, clinical interview simulation and multilingual medical education meeting. In Annex I a prototype of healthcare virtual lab with three roles is included: physician, immigrant allophone patient and interpreter.
