Abstract

Physical Education (PE) is a place where all the students, regardless of their differences, should enhance their learning. Student-centered pedagogies encourage active learning and might contribute to students’ engagement. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Sport Education (SE) on students’ physical activity (PA) during PE. A total of 40 year-5 (10-11 years) and year-6 (11-12 years) students were engaged in a 15 lessons season of basketball. Data was collected using accelerometers, measuring PA levels and the number of steps per lesson. Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) and the PE teacher perception were used to categorize students into beginners or skilled students. Results indicated that boys tend to be more actively engaged during SE than girls in a competitive setting despite the use of specific strategies. Teachers should consider the use of hybrid models, less competitive environments or alternative contents to enhance participation in PE.
