Abstract

Muscle strength is essential for functionality and quality of life in older adults, particularly those with sarcopenia, a condition associated with aging that involves the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. The objective of this review was to evaluate the effects of blood flow restriction (BFR) strength training in older adults with sarcopenia. The search identified 4 controlled clinical trials that met the inclusion criteria, involving a total of 147 participants. These studies consistently demonstrated that BFR strength training improved muscle strength, muscle mass, and functionality in older adults with sarcopenia. The results indicated significant improvements in walking speed, flexibility, balance, and mobility, suggesting an overall enhancement in the physical functionality of the participants. BFR strength training emerged as a promising intervention for improving muscle health and physical performance in older adults with sarcopenia. In conclusion, BFR strength training can potentially be a valuable tool in addressing sarcopenia in older adults.
