El profesor Ruiz-Vargas se pregunta en su artículo si es posible actualmente mantener el postulado del funcionalismo según el cual podemos explicar el funcionamiento de la mente (esto es, de la conducta y de los procesos cognitivos) ignorando el sustrato neuropsicológico en el que ésta está implementada. El autor concluye que actualmente no es posible defender este postulado y que es necesario que la Psicología Cognitiva, heredera de él, converja con las Neurociencias Cognitivas para buscar una explicación integradora de la mente humana.
