En nuestra sociedad, el número de personas mayores de sesenta años está aumentando en mayor grado que ningún otro grupo de edad, produciéndose un cambio en la pirámide poblacional. El envejecimiento de la población constituye uno de los principales logros de la humanidad, pero a su vez conlleva un importante desafío. Con el aumento de la edad se observa un descenso parcial de las funciones cognitivas y aunque no es un hecho generalizado, existe un porcentaje relativamente alto de personas que experimentan cambios cognitivos, especialmente problemas de memoria (Deary et al., 2009). Así, en torno a un 20% de la población mayor sufre deterioro cognitivo leve (Petersen et al., 2010) y entre un 5-10% desarrolla demencia (Plassma et la., 2007). La preservación de las funciones cognitivas es una condición necesaria para desarrollar una vida independiente y productiva, por lo que su deterioro reduce el grado de independencia, de autonomía personal, de interacciones sociales y en definitiva de la calidad de vida.
