The Screen for Caregiver Burden (SCB) is a measure designed to identify and assess caregivers with burnout who are caring for impaired elderly persons. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the SCB and compared its discriminative efficacy to the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS) using the Rasch model. The SCB was administered to 102 participants, 77 of whom were primary caregivers of patients with dementia. The results suggest that the performance of the five response categories is not optimal. Re-analysis suggests that a three-category system is more suitable and would provide a more well-balanced measure with better psychometric properties. Compared to the ZCBS, the SCB items identify a broader set of caregiver burden symptoms.
