Between Didactics and Ideology: Some Examples of Grammar Manuals Published in Venice in the Second Half of the 16th Century

This paper intends to examine the grammar manuals and the pronouncing guides that come together with some editions of Alfonso de Ulloa, a Spanish polygraph who had settled down in Venice in the 2nd half of the 16th century, when Italy was politically and militarily dominated by Spain. It analyses the intentions that held sway over those books as well as their systems of representation, underscoring how these works shed light on the relationships between Spain and Italy and on a few translators who
endeavoured to enable readers to reach a better understanding thanks to practical and accessible books, thus sometimes converting themselves into grammarians and linguists. Keywords: Spain, Venice, didactics, translations, representations.
