Literary documentary on both sides of the Atlantic: from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the neighbourhoods of Luanda and stories about overcoming adversity
Keywords:
Literary Journalism, Documentary, Favela, Brazil, AngolaAbstract
Departing from literary documentary, the type of documentary put together with techniques commonly associated with literary journalism (immersion research, use of first person, subjective interpretation), we analyse how examples of overcoming socioeconomic adversity are portrayed both in the largest favela of Rio de Janeiro, Complexo do Alemão, and in the poor neighbourhoods of Luanda. The documentaries under scrutiny are Complexo: Universo Paralelo (2011) and I Love Kuduro (2013) directed by the Portuguese brothers Pedro and Mário Patrocínio. The transatlantic element is presented under a triangular prism encompassing the Portuguese direction of documentaries based on research of Brazilian and Angolan realities. Analysing the informative message of both documentaries, it is concluded that the spirit of cultural and communal belonging foster the overcoming of daily life adversity as lived in environments of social and economic periphery.
