Basketball performance depends on several factors. Among these, anaerobic power, which is the basis of various game actions, is considered extremely important. However, strength, endurance, speed, agility and coordination are all relevant factors in this sport.
The objective of this study was to analyze results of jumping tests (height and power), repeated sprint tests (speed and resistance) and agility tests, looking for correlations and relationships with the playing position. For this reason, validated protocols and appropriate instrumentation were used: repeated sprint ability test (RSA) and modified agility “T” test (MAT), both with time measurement provided by photocells, and countermovement jumps (CMJ) and squat jumps (SJ) on a dynamometric platform. The analysis of the force-velocity relationship during a vertical jump represents the gold standard for evaluating the maximum power of the lower limbs.
Strong correlations were determined between values of peak power and jump height, while between these variables and the best time in RSA the correlation was statistically significant but weak. The result of the agility test was not related to other measures. No significant differences have been found between the different roles and positions. The difference in the results of power-sprint versus agility was remarkable, and we would recommended to take that into account in training plans. We highlighted also the importance of measuring any different ability with a specific test.
