Evaluation of the shoulder ROM of tennis players as an indicator of injury rate

The practice of tennis is inevitably associated with the development of dominant shoulder injuries due to the mechanics of the sport. Our objective was to relate the occurrence of previous shoulder injuries to range of motion (ROM) in 35 adult male amateur tennis players (age = 36.46 ±5.62 years, number of tournaments played in 2022 = 4.00 ±1.50 tournaments). Measurement of the ROM of the dominant shoulder and a questionnaire to inquire about injuries and sporting habits were carried out. Results: there is a significant correlation between the occurrence of injuries and the ROM of the dominant arm (x2 = 14.33; α < 0.05). In those amateur tennis players who did not warm-up were those who had suffered some type of injury and were therefore more susceptible to injury (x2 =12.01; α < 0.05); the duration of the warm-up of those tennis players who did not warm up for less than five minutes were those who had suffered the most injuries (x2 = 8.22; α < 0.05); and finally, it was observed that the performance of stretching exercises had no statistical influence on the appearance of injuries in these tennis players (p>0.05). Conclusion, it is affirmed that to avoid the appearance of injuries in adult amateur tennis players it is recommended to perform exercises to improve or increase the ROM in the dominant arm, in addition that a correct warm-up should be performed prior to training sessions and matches, and finally, this warm-up should necessarily have a duration of more than 5 minutes.
