Depression and memory: explicit and implicit tests

Depression, implicit and explicit memory tests, perceptual and conceptual testsAbstract
This paper focuses on the effects of mood on memory, beginning with a review of the memory deficits presented by depressed subjects in explicit tasks such as free recall or recognition. Next, an analysis of the essential aspects of implicit memory tasks is conducted, leading to the conclusion that although the depressed show memory deficits in explicit tasks they do not show the same pattern of results in implicit tasks. This disparity is taken as clear evidence of dissociation between the two types of tasks. Finally, depressed subjects also show a dissociation of results between perceptive and conceptual implicit tasks. Specifically, memory problems are evident in conceptual tasks whereas they are not apparent in perceptive tasks.
