Abstract

In issue 128 of Encounters in Biology, a general overview of the three generations of sequencing (NGS, new generation sequencing) was published. These technologies are evolving at a rapid pace, and since that article, it is worth noting, for example, the considerable advancement of Illumina technology, with its HiSeq 2500/1500 system, capable of generating up to 600 Gigabases per reaction.

Also noteworthy is the development of a novel sequencing system: Ion Torrent, in which nucleotides are not detected by fluorescence or light emission, but by the change in pH as a result of the release of a proton following the incorporation of the nucleotide.
