Abstract

This study aims to analyse the evolution of victimisation and the perception of insecurity in the municipality of Alcorcón (Madrid) between 2016 and 2019 and to find out the differences in terms of age, gender and areas.

Through surveys of a representative sample of 1,600 people in 2016 and 2019, changes in self-reported crime rates were assessed, as well as variations in the subjective perception of insecurity among citizens.

The study also explores the measures taken by residents to avoid crime and fear of crime, in order to identify the factors that influence the feeling of safety in the municipality.

The analysis reveals that, although victimisation rates showed a slight decrease between 2016 and 2019, perceptions of insecurity also reflect this trend. It is put in context with previous European and Spanish studies where the downward trend is reflected and also shows that situational prevention measures are effective in this regard.
