Abstract

Europe is the most urbanized continent, currently more than a quarter of its territory. Urban spaces, although they are catalysts of growth, innovation, knowledge and economic activity, present as a counterpoint a wide variety of social, environmental and economic problems, handicaps whose overcoming has become a priority for the European Union. The objective of these policies is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in urban areas, proposing a battery of measures, from the renovation of outdated infrastructures, to actions in the field of economy and employment, the fight against social exclusion or the improvement of the environment. The tool that has to serve to achieve this goal in Spain, is none other than the preparation and implementation of Integrated Sustainable Development Strategies, successors in our country of various initiatives whose beginnings date back to the mid-90s such as the Urban Initiative, the URBAN Community Initiative or the Urban Pilot Projects. Given the novelty of the EDUSI, the article compares and analyzes two Strategies from as many Asturian cities that have been successful in the first call, achieving the desired funding.
