Abstract

Even today there are still doubts and misgivings about the origin of Hekate and her cult; it is a very special deity who possesses typical attributes of areas ranging from chthonic to magical. Her cult, well attested in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, does not seem to have enjoyed the same popularity in the western parts of the Roman Empire. This paper aims to investigate the ambiguous story of the spreading of her cult in Dacia and to verify, within the broader context relating to the affirmation of the Eastern deities in this province, to what extent has the religious and social identity of the territory resisted to the worship
of Hekate, and how much instead it has assimilated some of her peculiarities, synthesizing them, perhaps, in other divine entities of wider dissemination.
