Remarks on a Byzantine, Anonimous Treatise on Chiromancy

An anonimous treatise on chiromancy is newly edited (Costanza, 2017). It is noteworthy, to give further remarks about this work and to focus it within literary context of Byzantine divination. At this respect, Middle Latin and Anglonorman treatises about palmistry are also to be compared. This handwork shows close connections with further divinatory methods of Medieval times, notoriously with astrology. In particular, it inherited melothesia and various exegetical
rules from astrological literature. At this respect, an evident link is also to be stressed with palmomancy, that is, quiver-divination, which is based upon twitches of the human body, and omoplatomancy, whose prophecies are drawn from the bones of the shoulder-blade of a sheep.
