Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; names of modern authors are in small caps in footnotes and the bibliography; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The submission must include, if applicable, the source of funding for the research that has resulted in the published work (funding agency(ies) and project code(s)).
  • All the metadata information has been filled in (title, abstract and keywords, in Spanish and English; information on all authors (name and surname, institutional affiliation, email, ORCID code).

Author Guidelines

- Papers need to be in accordance with the Journal's thematic focus and will be subjected to peer-reviewed processes. Acceptance or rejection will be based on the indications by the reviewers. 

- Publication of accepted papers will no entail a fee for the author.

Material sent for publication in MHNH must conform to the following guidelines:

  • Registration: Authors must register at the UMA Editorial website: http://revistas.uma.es, and upload their work to the OJS platform. Exceptionally they can send them, via email, to llesage@uco.es
  • Structure: Papers should include: a) Title in the language of the paper and in English; b) author's name and institution; c) abstract in the language of the paper and in English (no longer than seven lines); d) keywords in the language of the paper and in English (maximun five).
  • Language: Originals can be written in any of the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. 
  • Format: Originals must be presented in electronic version (preferably in Microsoft Word Windows or Apple MacWord), in A4, double spaced, with a left margin of 4 cm. LETTER TYPE: Times New Roman. LETTER SIZE: a) Body: 12 pt.; b) Textual citations more than three lines long: 11 pt.; c) Footnotes: 10 pt.; d) Bibliography: 12 pt. Avoid the use of bold, underline, or CAPS for emphatic purposes (use only italic). Extension of papers should not surpass 25 pages, except prior agreement with the editors.
  • Illustrations: It is the responsibility of the authors to obtain the necessary permissions for the images that are subject to copyright. 
  • Greek and astrological fonts: Greek texts must use a Unicode font; for astrological signs, authors may send the font together with the text.
  • Bibliography: A list of references with the literature cited more than twice in the footnotes should accompany the text.

Frequent citations (more than twice): Should also be referred in the final Bibliography; in the footnotes cite the name of the author, year of publication, and pages: E. M. Butler, 1949, pp. 30-35.

One-time citations: Either follow the same procedure as above or include the whole reference in the footnotes (with the difference that in the Bibliography the lastname precedes the name: BUTLER, E.M. Ritual Magic, Cambridge, 1949).

  1. Books: Author (in case of collective authorship, separate by commas, with "&" before last), comma, title in italic, comma, volume in Roman number (when appropriate), comma, place of publication, comma, year (with superscript for the corresponding edition if it is not the first and in parenthesis the first), comma, cited pages. Ejs.: DE MARTINO, Il mondo magico , Torino, 1948, pp. 84-95. / BOLL, C. BEZOLD & W. GUNDEL, Sternglaube und Sterndeutung. Die Geschichte und das Wesen der Astrologie, Leipzig, 1931.
  2. Articles: For abbreviations of Journals follow L'Année Philologique: author, comma, title between quotation marks (" "), comma, title of the Journal in italic, comma, issue in Arabic numbers, year of publication in parenthesis, and pages. Ejs.: A.H. KRAPPE, “Tiberius and Thrasyllus”, AJP, 48 (1927) 359-366. / JORDAN, “Defixiones from a Wall near the Southwest Corner of the Athenian Agora”, Hesperia, 54 (1985), pp. 210-212.
  3. Works in collective volumes: Cite as if it were articles, followed by the title of the collective work in italic. Ej.: KYRIELEIS, "???? ??????. Zur Sternsymbolik hellenistischer Herrscherbildnisse" in Studien zur klassischen Archäologie. F. Hiller, Saarbrücken, 1986, pp. 55-72.

Ancient authors: Abbreviations of works and names of ancient Greek authors should follow the conventions of DGE by F. Rodríguez Adrados (ed.); or alternatively of LSJ by Liddell, Scott & Jones (eds.); abbreviations of works and names of ancient Latin authors, the conventions of THESAURUS LINGUAE LATINAE.

References to footnotes: These references (in Arabic numbers) must always be placed before the punctuation sign: “Il y eut des répartitions par planètes3; [...] de l'autre aux signes du Zodiaque4”.

SCHEDULE FOR PUBLICATIONS

Originals must be sent before the 31st of January each year to be taken in consideration for the following number. 

In a two-month delay, occasionnally longer, the editorial team will communicate to the author whether the paper has been accepted for publication or not, and will inform of any observation, suggestion and decision made by the external reviewers. 

During this time, authors will receive the first proofs, to be revised and corrected whithin a period of two weeks.
