Abstract

It seems like just yesterday, but the theory of punctuated equilibrium has just turned 21 years old. To commemorate this occasion, its progenitors, Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge, have published a review article in Nature. They discuss how their contributions, along with subsequent developments by Steven Stanley and Elizabeth Vrba, have catalyzed a new research program in evolutionary biology and have been widely accepted by most researchers in this field
