Abstract

34 years have passed since Patrick H. O’Farrell described the creation of the first two-dimensional gel where he managed to resolve more than 1100 different proteins from E. coli and began a promising career to unravel the study of the proteome. This term had not yet been coined, as it did not appear for the first time until 1995 to define the set of PROTeins expressed by a genOME; later the term proteomics named the study of the proteome. But, in these years of transition and development, perhaps it would have been better to use the term prometeomics, because several additional factors were needed for the newly born technique to have the great utility it enjoys at these moments.
