Abstract

Forest  are  essential components  of the ecosystem and play a key role  in climate change. Maritime pine   ( Pinus pinaster Ait.) is the most widely planted softwood species in the western mediterranean forming  part of reforestation programmes. Biotechnological  approaches  for the improvement of maritime pine, such  as somatic embryogenesis (ES), offer new opportunities in the field of in vitro propagation and genetic engineering. Somatic embryogenesis is one of the main methods  for the genetic improvement of forest   species and may provide a powerful tool for rapid increase in yield and wood quality.
