Abstract

The increase in food intake that is occurring especially in so-called first world countries is causing a series of metabolic and hormonal alterations that together with environmental factors affect the initiation and progression of a number of cancers. It has been demonstrated in laboratory mice that caloric restriction may help in the prevention of cancer although the mechanisms by which it occurs in humans are unknown. In addition, it has been seen that fasting can improve the efficiency of chemotherapy.
