Abstract

Mammals are present in all terrestrial biomes, from tropical jungles to the poles and in all oceans. To do this, they have had to adapt to very different ways of life, such as aerial (bats), aquatic (cetaceans) or underground (moles). All this variability of habitats and adaptations is accompanied by a high taxonomic diversity, with almost 5,500 species of current mammals. However, this diversity is not evenly distributed among the different groups, as more than 5,100 species are placental, while only 5 species are monotremes and 340 are marsupials
