Abstract

Gut microbiota plays a very important role in many physiological functions of the host organism. Its modification (dysbiosis) has been associated with several pathologies and there is increasing research  that  raises its involvement in central nervous system-related diseases. The interplay between the microbiota and the brain is framed within the gut-brain axis, thus establishing a communication pathway that can lead to  the alteration of the normal functions of the central nervous system, or during its development. This article presents some mechanisms by which the microbiota may be involved in alterations in the normal function of the central nervous system and presents recent data about its possible role  in the development of symptoms  of autism spectrum disorder.
