Abstract

The results obtained by airborne pollen of Plantago in Malaga during 1992-1997, sampled by means of a volumetric spore-trap (Burkard seven-days recording), are showed in this work. An analysis about the annual, daily and intradiurnal variations, and an statistical study of correlation (Spearman's correlation) between the daily pollen counts and several meteorological parameters, have been carried out. The maximum values of airborne Plantago pollen were always registered during April and May, and between 12:00 and 14:00 Spanish Official Time. We observed important quantitative differences in the pollen counts for 1995 and 1996, because due to the abnormal accumulative rain falls during the three previous months (January-March) at the pollination period (1995 was exceptionally dry while 1996 was very rainy). This genus sometimes reached very high daily concentrations (more than 100 pollen grains per cubic meter of air) in 1996. The patterns of intradiurnal distribution have been very similar in all the years studied, obtaining the maximum peaks at the same hours, although there are little differences in the IDI (intradiurnal distribution index) values for 1995 (0.10) and 1996 (0.19). We believe that intradiurnal pollen distribution of this genus is related with the typical species for each locality, the distance between the sampling site and this species, and the climatic and geographical characteristics for each locality. The correlations obtained between daily airborne Plantago pollen and the different meteorological parameters show that, in Malaga, this pollen is always positively correlated with sunshine and temperature during the pre-peak period of pollination, and with the rainfall during the post-peak period. Wind is another important parameter for the airborne Plantago pollen in Malaga. Highly significant and positive correlations were observed with windspeed and NW wind, whereas the correlations with frequency of calms and others wind directions were, generally, negative.
