SUMARY. Critical review of the studies on biogeography of seaweeds from the Mediterranean Sea. Seaweed biogeography, like subdiscipline of the biogeography, could be divided on the basis of methodological approach used: descriptive biogeography, narrative biogeography and analytic biogeography. In this paper, we analyse the contributions to the biogeography of seaweeds from the Mediterranean Sea, in accordance with each one of these approaches. Scarce floras of the Mediterranean eastern and African coast exist, besides a methodological stagnation, impeding the advance of this science with regard to other branches of the biogeography. Possible future research lines are discussed and proposed.
Key words. Analytical biogeography, descriptive biogeography, narrative biogeography, Mediterranean Sea, seaweeds.
