Abstract

The non-aggregative approach used by Eurostat to measure social exclusion, based on several indicators, makes the diagnosis difficult. Therefore, in this paper several synthetic indicators have been used, according to different methodologies in the aggregation process (based on statistics, such as Distance to Principal Components, or non statistical methods, such as the Goal Programming Synthetic Indicator), in order to measure social exclusion in nowadays European Union. Thus, the analysis of these indicators can shed some light on the real situation and its main characteristics, with the aim of being more effective in the applied policies.
