Abstract

Thorns and swords are scarcely known among Eros’ weapons. Thorns were supposed to pierce Aphrodite’s feet and her sandals were protective means to avoid Eros’ injuries. The related iconography was used to interfere with love affairs. Eros is depicted as removing a thorn from
a lion’s paw on some gems which were supposed to help against love pains. Some spells called “swords” were other magic weapons which could force a woman to make sex with the pactitioner. Eros was often depicted as riding on the back of a lion, which symbolized the soul of a man. Also
Harpokrates was depicted on the back of a lion, sometimes in front of a woman who is addressing a prayer to him. This young god was probably the Egyptian substitute for Eros.
