Narrative Drawing as a Qualitative Research Strategy with Children: Voices Traversing the Margins

Engaging in educational research often brings us face to the abyss of how to proceed—especially when we move within the margins of qualitative inquiry and, even more so, when our focus is on research with children. This type of work may appear to be reserved for a select few willing to innovate and implement strategies that breathe life into research, grounding it in a rich pedagogical and educational substratum. Yet it is neither an impossible undertaking nor should it rely solely on the researcher’s instinct or expertise. There are research strategies that make such work viable—strategies that value care and the recognition of children’s voices. What we propose here is a form of research that positions the adult researcher in service of childhood. In the following pages, we will explore what this position entails and how to make use of the tools at our disposal to listen attentively to children, planting the field of educational research with new voices and renewed perspectives.
