Abstract

To celebrate its twentieth anniversary, the magazine Nature Biotechnology, belonging to the Nature publishing group, has dedicated a special section in its March 2016 issue. This celebration section begins with an editorial titled “Breaking out of the bubble”, followed by a commentary on the economic impact of biotechnology companies in the United States and continues with a systematic review of the contributions published in the magazine through 3 Feature articles titled “20 years of Nature Biotechnology research tools”, “20 years of Nature Biotechnology biomedical research” and “20 years of Nature Biotechnology bioengineering research”. In the Voices of biotech section, the magazine’s editors ask a selection of researchers to point out the most exciting frontiers in their field and what are the most demanded new technologies to advance knowledge and the development of applications. For its part, in the Community crystal gazing section, several biotechnology professionals offer their points of view about the challenges that the sector will have to face in the coming years. The special article titled “When biotech goes bad” takes a look at the dark side of biotechnology over the past 20 years. The last article is dedicated to the topic of patents, commenting on The changing life science patent landscape.
