Abstract

  1. C. carcharias is an extraordinary species. In fact, it possesses a very special physiological adaptation that gives it the ability to regulate the internal temperature of its viscera. It regulates its temperature by means of a complex "rete mirabile" heat exchange system that works thanks to a mechanism that, by counter-current, manages to retain the heat generated metabolically instead of losing it to the ambient water.
